'Mortal Kombat' Is One Of The Biggest R Rated Films In Australia & Here's The Proof

26 April 2021 | 2:32 pm | Staff Writer

'Mortal Kombat' scores second biggest R rating of all time in Australia.

The new Mortal Kombat film has dominated the Australian box office this past weekend in a major way.

Release nationwide on Thursday (with some early sneak previews on Wednesday), the film based on the iconic video game jumped straight to #1, raking in $4.07 million.

The figure ensures that Mortal Kombat now holds the second biggest opening for an R rated film in Australia, sitting just behind 2014's The Wolf Of Wall Street ($5.13 million) and ahead of Eyes Wide Shut ($2.55 million), The Hateful Eight ($2.42million ) and Kill Bill Vol.1 ($2.26 million).

Filmed entirely in South Australia in late 2019, Mortal Kombat stars Australia's own Josh Lawson and an ensemble cast  that includes Lewis Tan (Deadpool 2), Jessica McNamee (The Meg) and Tadanobu Asano (Midway).

The news comes just a month after The Dry - also filmed in Australia and based on the popular 2016 novel by Jane Harper - became the of the top highest grossing Australian films of all time.
