A rare Darwin performance for Gurrumul will be one of the night’s highlights.

More Yothu Yindi More Yothu Yindi

The big tribute to the great Yothu Yindi that was already planned to be the central focus of the National Indigenous Music Awards will take on a new significance with the recent passing of that band's leader, the great Mr Yunupingu. It's not all that surprising then that there are plenty more great acts eager to be involved.

Gurrumul very rarely performs in Darwin, so his addition is a very exciting one. Also on the bill is the great Shellie Morris who will join Rrawun Maymuru for a rendition of Dots On The Shells, Khal Wallace and Jhindu Lawrie of The Medics will be back with Bunna Lawrie of Coloured Stone, Grant Nundhirribala from legendary NT band Yilila will perform a song with Djolpa McKenzie of the Black Arm Band, Yothu Yindi's Djapana will be performed by Kutcha Edwards and Dewayne Everettsmith hip hop act Jimblah will get the energy up and youngsters Rolku Band will perform a couple of songs early in the night.

Also making an appearance on the night will be actor David Gulpilil, who will recite on of the group's songs, My Kind Of Life.

In further exciting news, if you can't make the trip up to Darwin, then free to air station NITV will be broadcasting the NIMA ceremony and all performances with just a one hour delay, so you can feel as if you're right among the action!
