More Elton John More Elton John

Molly Meldrum has apologised for gatecrashing Sir Elton John's Farewell show in Melbourne and has blamed his scandalous behaviour on a wardrobe malfunction.

On Friday night, Molly Meldrum shocked fans when his pants fell down without warning, and he flashed the audience his bare bum. The legendary music critic and presenter has come out to say that incident was due to a wardrobe malfunction concerning his belt.

“I shouldn’t have crashed Elton’s show. As for my performance being more revealing than it should have been … well, at the start of the night, my belt buckle broke and my pants were already falling down. And on stage, one thing led to another,” he told the Herald Sun

Prior to the mooning, Meldrum was in the audience, enjoying the show. Both he and John have been lifelong friends ever since the Tiny Dancer singer first ventured to Australia and was interviewed by Meldrum.

As the concert progressed, John gave a special tribute to Meldrum, saying, "He’s quite honestly a national treasure. I want to thank him for all the love and loyalty he’s shown me over the years. I love you."

Meldrum then left the General Admission area and took to the stage. The pair performed The Bitch Is Back before Meldrum's belt failed, and his trousers made their descent. Rather than acting sheepish, Meldrum lent into the malfunction and lifted up his jacket, exposing his bum to the audience, as can be seen in the video below.

The national treasure responded the next day, saying, "I feel terrible if any of the security people get in trouble. The whole thing was 100 per cent my idea – no one else knew what I was doing. Elton might have been singing The Bitch is Back, but it was more a case of The Idiot is Back.”

"I just hope my antics didn’t detract from a truly spectacular show and Elton’s fabulous farewell. No one is to blame apart from me.

“Elton is an icon and a legend. I’m just a naughty boy, who needs a new belt.”
