Acclaimed New York-bred alt-rock legends Mercury Rev have announced their first live shows on Australian shores since way back in 2002, heading Down Under for a pair of performances in honour of impending new studio full-length The Light In You this December.

The long-serving outfit will kick off their brief Aussie sojourn in Melbourne, at Max Watt's, on Tuesday, 8 December, and head up to Brisbane to play The Zoo a few nights later, on Friday, 11 December.

The Light In You marks Mercury Rev's eighth studio album, and arrives following seven years of silence from the venerated veterans, whose last full-length release came in the form of 2008's Snowflake Midnight. Expectations, therefore, are certainly running high but fans have no need to worry, if co-founder Grasshopper is to be believed:

"It is the best stuff we have done in a long, long time," he said. "Gonna be big-sounding!"
