More XIII More XIII

The new project from Gyroscope frontman Dan Sanders, XIII, was launched last year, and after recently making their live debut and unleashing an album, they’ve offered up a cover of Stella Donnelly’s acclaimed single Mechanical Bull.

With Karnivool’s Drew Goddard on drums and Mykal Deville on bass, XIII have paid tribute to the Perth musician with an upbeat reworking of the tune.

“When I initially heard the song, I recall reacting to the opening acoustic guitar sound,” Sanders told The Music.

“To me, there was a Something In The Way or Polly vibe to it. It really felt familiar to me. So I headed up to my home studio, The Cabin, to figure out the chords and structure.

“A day or so after this, I remember running through it a few times with Drew and Myk at a band jam. Getting loud as shit, whilst getting to know the song well in the jam room got us really falling into the song. We made sure it sounds like our interpretation and we've included this song in our live setlist.

“Having been through similar situations, this is our alternate landscape of her cool design. There's a focus on keeping Stella's lyrical values and her intent at the top of all things."

You can catch it live alongside cuts from the band’s debut album, Bloody Banks Of The Swan, this month when they embark on a WA tour.
