One of Spain's greats gets things started.

Keen film buffs heading along to the Melbourne International Film Festival's Opening Night Gala will be treated to a screening of the latest feature from the masterful Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, it has today been announced, as his latest flick I'm So Excited! is set to get the festival off to a spectacular start.

I'm So Excited! is said to see Almodóvar going back to his raunchy, camp style of filmmaking, though the screwball farce is also said to be a biting satire on contemporary Spanish politics. Given the widespread critical acclaim that comes with just about every film he releases, this is a pretty solid start for what looks to be another great festival.

The film will be screening as a part of the gala event at Hamer Hall, Arts Centre Melbourne on Thursday 25 July and the general public are able to get tickets through the festival's website or the venue's box office from 10am this Thursday.
