Matchbox Twenty announced their first album in eleven years, Where The Light Goes, will be released via Atlantic Records on Friday, 26 May. To promote the new record, the band have unveiled Wild Dogs (Running In A Slow Dream).
Rob Thomas, Brian Yale, Paul Doucette, and Kyle Cook have come together to unleash an upbeat pop-rock number destined for radio success. Matchbox Twenty promise “another great batch of real, relevant, and relatable songs” via a press release, and Wild Dogs is the perfect song to welcome them back into the fold.
Where The Light Goes was produced by Gregg Wattenberg with band members Paul Doucette and Kyle Cook.
Matchbox Twenty have also announced a 50-date North American tour, which kicks off this May, to celebrate the new album. It’ll be their first tour since their 2017 run that celebrated 20 years of their debut album, Yourself Or Someone Like You.
The successful rock group last toured in Australia in 2012 with INXS and Evermore on the North tour - the album hit #1 here and in the US. There’s no word on when they’ll return down under, but considering that they performed in arenas last time, Matchbox Twenty’s management would know that we’re a money-making audience.
The Music reviewer Paul Smith wrote about their Sydney gig, “The two-hour, 25-song set featured a no-nonsense rattle through crowd-pleasing oldies but also a good chunk of the band's latest album. Of those, the deep rhythms of Our Song, the exposed beauty of I Will and particularly the contrasting dark verse and open chorus of English Town were highlights.
"The band hinted at a special surprise being saved for the end, which saw INXS join them on the stage for a funked-to-the-max cover of The Easybeats' Good Times. They clearly were, and for the rejuvenated Matchbox Twenty at least that looks set to continue for quite some time yet.”
Since the release of 2012’s North, Rob Thomas has released the solo album Chip Toothed Smile in 2019 and reunited with Santana on the single, Move in 2021.
Folk-rock singer Matt Nathanson and singer-songwriter Ben Rector will join Matchbox Twenty on their massive US tour.
