More Lorde More Lorde

Punters at the Lorde-themed club night at Mary’s Underground in Sydney on Sunday (25 May) were in for the surprise of their lives when the artist of the hour, Lorde herself, appeared and danced with the audience.

According to fan posts on X (formerly known as Twitter), Instagram, and TikTok, fans didn’t immediately realise that the Royals singer was actually there with them. Lorde was spotted behind the decks with DJ Emma Parke before more fans found her when she was dancing amidst the crowd.

Lorde danced to fan-favourites Green Light and Supercut with her devoted fans, plus new single What Was That and her verse in the Girl, so confusing remix by Charli XCX. You can see more footage from the night below.

Mary’s Underground announced the Lorde-themed night on Instagram last week, captioning the post: “Girl… WHAT WAS THAT

“We’re throwing a club night dedicated to @lorde on Sunday, 25 May as part of our new Sunday series at @marysunderground!

“We’re officially in the L4 era, so it’s only right we throw a party for our true Lorde & saviour!

“Come dance (or cry) in the club as DJ @xeimma plays all the eras, alongside alt-pop bangers, drag shows, and themed drinks!”

The thrilling night arrives as Lorde prepares to release her highly anticipated fourth album, Virgin. She kicked off the album campaign with the first single, What Was That, which she teased on social media before releasing a music video filmed in New York City.

Lorde will release the second single from her forthcoming album, Man Of The Year, this week. Virgin will be released on Friday, 27 June.

Upon announcing the release of Virgin earlier this month, Lorde said of the inspirations:

THE COLOUR OF THE ALBUM IS CLEAR. LIKE BATHWATER, WINDOWS, ICE, SPIT. FULL TRANSPARENCY. THE LANGUAGE IS PLAIN AND UNSENTIMENTAL. THE SOUNDS ARE THE SAME WHEREVER POSSIBLE. I WAS TRYING TO SEE MYSELF, ALL THE WAY THROUGH.

I WAS TRYING TO MAKE A DOCUMENT THAT REFLECTED MY FEMININITY: RAW, PRIMAL, INNOCENT, ELEGANT, OPENHEARTED, SPIRITUAL, MASC. I’M PROUD AND SCARED OF THIS ALBUM. THERE’S NOWHERE TO HIDE. I BELIEVE THAT PUTTING THE DEEPEST PARTS OF OURSELVES TO MUSIC IS WHAT SETS US FREE.

Lorde produced the album with Jim-E Stack and locked in additional collaborations with Fabiana Palladino, Dan Nigro (Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan), Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes (Turnstile), Andrew Aged, and Buddy Ross.

You can pre-order/pre-save the album here.
