The West Australian hip hop/jazz crew have a pile of good news to kick off their 2016

More Koi Child More Koi Child

Rambunctious Fremantle-based seven-piece hip hop/jazz ensemble Koi Child spent 2015 wowing us with their energetic live performances (they were one of our top 10 acts at last year's BIGSOUND), and they're set to up their game even further in 2016, starting with a massive announcement regarding their debut album and national tour plans.

Produced by Tame Impala's Kevin Parker, the band's self-titled debut will be released Friday 18 March via Pilerats Records, and comes stuffed with 14 tracks of genre-crushing wonderment informed by the group's multi-faceted influences and instrumental skills. It was recorded at Mangebong, on an island south of Perth, buoyed to completion by a whole lot of goodwill and Koi Child's undeniably bountiful creativity.

"We recorded the album in a little house on an island which included a nerve-wracking river crossing on a boat, with a large amount of loaned recording gear," keyboardist Tom Kenny said in a statement.

"The shack-turned-recording studio made for a really nice vibe: swimming in the river, recording vocals in the kitchen, sinking an ungodly amount of tinnies and encounters with giant weirdo spiders."

The good news about the record comes hot on the heels of the band revealing their super-chill new cut 1-5-9, which provides yet another slice (after Black Panda) of accomplished, sophisticated fusion sounds, one whose rolling-snare intro gives way to the kind of chilled, ambling bass and keys work, technically inclined percussion and rapid-fire vocal flow that we've come to love about, and frankly now expect from, this ascendant outfit. The word you're looking for is "Yesssssssss".

Koi Child — the album — will be stepping out into the world concurrently with Koi Child's plans to take their show on the road once more for a run of Aussie shows, kicking off at Ballarat's Korova Lounge on Friday 11 March.

They next head to the stage of Golden Plains Festival, in Meredith, on Sunday 13 March, swinging through Melbourne (Northcote Social Club, Thursday 17 March) on the way to the album's launch day on the 18th, when they'll hit up Brisbane's Brightside.

Koi Child will then perform at Sydney's Newtown Social Club on Saturday 19 March before heading back home to Fremantle, where they close out the tour at The J Shed a couple of weeks later, on Saturday 2 April.

Koi Child will be released digitally, on CD and on vinyl, and is available for pre-order online now; those who get in early will get to enjoy an instant grat download of certified fan fave Slow One.

Tickets for Koi Child's celebratory national album tour are on sale now; Ballarat and Brisbane via Oztix, Golden Plains via the festival, Melbourne and Sydney via Northcote and Newtown social clubs, and Fremantle via Moshtix.
