Monocarpic to release one track a month
Outpost Management's Mark Richardson has launched a boutique singles-only label Monocarpic this week, with the first release coming from soul vocalist Jack Byrnes.
Richardson – whose artist management roster includes Kimbra, Bertie Blackman and The Hello Morning – will release one single a month and through live events throughout the year. Monocarpic will throw an end of year concert and release a 12-track compilation each year. The label will produce, market and distribute each single with profits split equally with the artist. Contracts with artists will last just the one single.
“The modern music business is about the moment and instant availability,” said Richardson, who was also a former label exec in the UK, “yet the current the business practices of most labels are about long-term contracts and multiple option periods, whilst their commitment is based on short term expectations. I wanted to create a vehicle that allows these moments to live and set seed, without being contractually restrictive to what might happen after.”
