Sydney producer, songwriter and engineer James Guido is venturing into uncharted artistic territory under his new project itsjames, and his first offering Complex is an introspective look into the journey ahead.

Itsjames has spent much of the last decade working globally with a range of different artists, but is now centering his own experimental expression through a new project that he describes will signify “the evolution of an artist in real time”. This passion project will see the artist explore the bounds of creativity and consistency as he promises listeners new music every two weeks as a testament to his dedication to the art of storytelling.

Speaking on how and why the itsjames project came to be, the artist said: “The project was born from a desire to process difficult emotions and challenges faced during a transformative period in [my] life, including stepping away from writing for others to focus on [my] artistry. Each song is a reflection of growth, resilience, and discovery, woven together with…hallmark attention to detail and emotive production style.”

Itsjames’ debut single Complex takes listeners into the sonic world he exists in, shaped by creative integrity, dynamic production and a commitment to growth. Influenced by the feeling of “floating in your own mind”, the track sees itsjames in a raw state of contemplation as his thoughts lead further into synth and drum-heavy house production. Complimented by energetic builds and contrasting textures, the song maintains a pulse of its own, dictating a liveliness that feels familiar, like a hit of adrenaline.

The song is the product of a sentiment itsjames envisions of a world without social media, virality and the incessant need to create to keep the machine going.

“Imagine a world where TikTok never existed and artists just made art for art’s sake,” the artist said in a press release, likening the notion to his determination to make art that is real, authentic and freeing over this year-long creative journey.
