Hottest 100 Voting Has Taken A Hit Since COVID

The numbers are still bonkers, though.

Triple J has shared some “juicy stats” in the lead up to this weekend’s highly anticipated Hottest 100 and the number of votes is once again staggering.

More than 2.5 million votes were submitted this year, with the annual countdown retaining its crown as "the world's biggest music democracy", but it seems votes have decreased since the start of the pandemic.

Whether or not COVID actually has anything to do with it, voting has essentially increased every year over the past decade but has dropped the past two years.

Here’s a breakdown of votes in recent years:

Other Hottest 100 stats revealed by triple j include:

  • 25 artists will be making their Hottest 100 debut
  • 8 songs in the countdown were uploaded to triple j Unearthed this year
  • 102 f-bombs across the countdown (as many as the last two countdowns combined)
  • August was the Hottest month, with the most amount of entries
  • 3 artists will join the 15-Songs-Or-Over Club across all Hottest 100 annual countdowns

As for who’s going to top tomorrow’s countdown?

100 Warm Tunas, “the internet's most accurate prediction" of the annual countdown, has The Wiggles’ Like A Version cover of Elephant as the top contender.

Over the past five years, Warm Tunas has successfully predicted three of the Hottest 100 winners, including Glass Animals’ Heat Waves (2020), Ocean Alley’s Confidence (2018) and Kendrick Lamar’s Humble (2017).

You can read more about this year's predictions here.

The Hottest 100 kicks off tomorrow, January 22, from 10am local time. For more details on the countdown, click here.
