ABC to tweak voting process after this year’s spoiler

More alt-J More alt-J

The annual triple j Hottest 100 fan-poll will have another impact on the ARIA Charts this year, with midweek figures indicating that Flume in particular – is storming up the Album Chart.

The Sydney producer had four entries in the triple j list (Holdin On at four; Sleepless at 12; his remix of Hermitude's HyperParadise at 18; On Top at 67) and will re-enter the ARIA top ten this week with his self-titled debut album, which is currently at 16.

According to the stats, similar Hottest 100 boosts will be enjoyed by The Lumineers, Alt-J, Frank Ocean and Tame Impala.

Bluesfest-headed The Lumineers' single Ho Hey managed 43 in the poll and their album, The Lumineers, will likely push into the top ten from 15. Mercury Prize-winners Alt-J, had three entries in the top 100 (Breezeblocks at three; Tessellate at 64; Something Good at 81) and their album An Awesome Wave will continue last week's bullet performance (from 34 to 22, its highest point so far) up the chart.

Frank Ocean also had three entries (Lost at eight; Thinkin Bout You at 56; Super Rich Kids at 80) and his album channel ORANGE will jump from 30. Tame Impala had two entires, both in the top ten, (Elephant at seven; Feels Like We Only Go Backwards at nine) their album Lonerism, currently 33, will also be an ARIA bullet performer this week.

Most of these artists have experienced moderate boosts over recent weeks, due to touring or festival visits, but also following the publishing of the Warmest 100 – a website which successfully predicted some of the Hottest 100 by collating votes posted to social media. Triple j have admitted that they will tweak the voting system for next year, with a rep saying, “While [a vote posted on social media] does open up the poll to speculation and analysis, there are always going to be surprises and a lot of fun on the day. We may make a few changes to the system to avoid spoiler attempts in the future.”

It doesn't appear that the spoiler has lessened the sales-boost of the voted tracks in the immediate week after.

However, and despite those boosts, the top spot on the ARIA Album Chart will likely be fought out by the familiar names of Bruno Mars' Unorthodox Jukebox (currently one), Hottest 100-topping Seattle duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' The Heist (two), Ed Sheeran's + (three) and Pink's The Truth About Love (five).

Ironically, there'll be far less movement in the actual ARIA Singles Chart this week. Midweek figures indicate that the one-two-three of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' Same Love and Thrift Shop and The Lumineers' Ho Hey will hold solid.

The numbers do show the possibility of late-week bullet performers that could shake up the top ten, with Of Monsters & Men, Neon Trees, McFly, Rudimental and James Arthur all in that basket.
