After nearly five decades of service to the local community, Hobart Uni Bar will offer its last drinks and close its doors this weekend.

The Tasmanian cultural institution will go out in style over two final days, wrapping up its 49-year history with gigs from Luca Brasi and special guests Glass Media, Dvrkworld and Ema on Friday, 27 June, and Old Mervs on Saturday, 28 June.

In March, it was announced that Hobart Uni Bar would close, but not before it went out with a bang.

The venue, known as the cornerstone of Tasmania’s music scene, is closing due to the University of Tasmania’s Sandy Bay redevelopment and the lease not being renewed.

Hobart Uni Bar’s impending closure has been described as a “significant blow” to the Hobart live music scene, Tasmania, and Australia as a whole. The venue has long been a beloved institution for music lovers, hosting many of Australia’s favourite national and international acts.

For generations, Hobart Uni Bar has been a watering hole for enthusiastic music fans. The venue’s roots can be traced back to 1976, when it was originally formed by the Tasmanian University Union. It has since remained a staple of the university campus.

Licensee Brendan Self said of farewelling the venue this weekend, “While it’s sad to say goodbye, we’re thrilled to send off the Uni Bar with two incredible nights, featuring Luca Brasi and Old Mervs this weekend. It’s going to be a fitting farewell to a truly special place.”

Kisschasy, who performed with special guests Sly Withers and Suzi, as well as ONEFOUR and The 046, farewelled Hobart Uni Bar last weekend.
