With the NSW government expected to roll out a more relaxed version of Sydney's lockout laws next year, locals have been given somewhat of a treat this Christmas, with the announcement that some of the changes will be put in place in time for the holidays.
As reported by Fairfax today, Justice Minister Troy Grant announced that Sydney and NSW residents will be able to buy alcohol from takeaway stores until 11pm from this Friday, while the patron limit for small bars will also be raised from 60 to 100.
Home delivery alcohol sales will also be allowed until 11pm.
However, the lockout restriction changes of 1.30am to 2am and last drink calls of 3am to 3.30am aren't expected to be brought in until 2017.
"We have brought forward these reforms so communities and businesses across NSW can take advantage of later trading times during the busy summer holiday period," Grant said.
Grant also confirmed that venues will be able to start applying for lockout exemptions by the end of the year and that the government will commence granting those exemptions from 16 January.
The news follows the Labor Party releasing its plan to save live music in Sydney following the detrimental impact lockout laws have had on the city, which include calls for a night mayor and all-night public transport on weekends.
