US pop lyricist Hal David died Saturday in Los Angeles following complications from a stroke -  he was 91.

David was best known as the songwriting partner of Burt Bacharach. Together they wrote a stream of pop classics that are amongst the most covered songs in the world: Walk On By, I Say A Little Prayer, I'll Never Fall In Love Again.

The pair began their hit partnership in the late 1950s, writing The Story Of My Life for Marty Robbins and Magic Moments for Perry Como.

In the '60s, they discovered their muse in Dione Warwick and collaborated on a string of hits for her including Do You Know The Way To San Jose and What The World Needs Now Is Love.

The songwriting partnership ended in the '70s and David went on to write with other great composers such as Albert Hammond (To All The Girls I've Loved Before) and John Barry (We Have All The Time In The World).

Australian artists also had an affinity with the songs of  Hal David and in 1998 a slew of local acts paid tribute to David and Bacharach on the compilation To Hal And Bacharach. It included The Avalanches (Do You Know The Way To San Jose), Tex Perkins (The Look Of Love), Dave Graney and The Dirty Three (What TheWorld Needs Now Is Love) and Regurgitator (The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance).

In 1982 Australian band The Reels had a hit with a cover of the David/Bacharach composition This Guy's In Love (With You):
