Gurrumul And Hannah Gadsby Win 2018 AACTA Awards

Following historic ARIA Award wins last week, Gurrumul has won another prestigious honour, this time at last night's AACTA Awards.

The late songwriter's April-released documentary, Gurrumul, took out the award for Best Feature Documentary at the event in Sydney, also marking first-time AACTA wins for director Paul Damien Williams and producer Shannon Swan.

It comes after Gurrumul was posthumously awarded four ARIAs last Wednesday night, including Best Male Artist and Best Independent Release. 

Meanwhile, Tasmanian comic Hannah Gadsby has also picked up her first AACTA Award after winning the Best Performance In A Television Comedy category for her critically-acclaimed stand-up special, Nanette.

The win comes just weeks after Gadsby was honoured at LA's Australian In Film Awards.

January-released film Sweet Country was the big winner of the 2018 AACTAs, taking out six awards including Best Film, Best Direction (Warwick Thornton) and Best Lead Actor (Hamilton Morris).

Nicole Kidman made history at last night's ceremony  by becoming the first actress to win two consecutive Best Supporting Actress awards - this year for Boy Erased and last year for Lion - while Simon Baker picked up the Best Supporting Actor award for Breath.

Boy Erased also received the AACTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay; director and actor Joel Edgerton joined The Music Podcast last month to discuss his latest film; check it out here.

The ceremony also included a special performance by Vance Joy with We're Coming Home and Katie Noonan delivered a cover of Nick Cave's The Ship Song for an In Memoriam tribute.
