Iluka won last year's competition

Mushroom Group supremo Michael Gudinski has again thrown his support behind commercial radio band competition First Break for 2013.

The competition is in its second year, after evolving from the New Artists 2 Radio initiative, and was last year won by Sydney's Iluka. Like Iluka, this year's winner will receive metro and regional radio play for 12 months as well as Mushroom financial backing for two singles, touring and marketing. The competition estimates the prize, for which entries opened today, at $2 million.

Gudinski, who was recently determined to be the second most powerful person in the music industry, said, “As a long term fan and champion of local music, I'm really proud to be backing First Break again in 2013. It's great that commercial radio is pushing upcoming Australian artists, and we think the partnership between commercial radio and Mushroom is the perfect match for any artist that has reached a certain point but really wants to take off.”

Commercial Radio Australia CEO Joan Warner added, “By providing ongoing support on air, as well as nurturing our winner across a broad range of areas off air, it will give them a genuine chance of forging a long and successful career.”
