Say what you will about Queenslanders (it's generally too hot here to fight you about it) but, when the steely hammer of Johnny Law bears down upon them, they refuse to go quietly.
Hence why, in the face of impending restructuring of the state's liquor and lockouts legislation that will see a 2am cessation of service — or 3am, in entertainment precincts — implemented from 1 July this year, several of Fortitude Valley's foremost live venues have banded together to throw Brisbane's Big Kick On! at the end of the month.
Although the lockout component of the legislative changes won't come into effect until February next year (at which point venues with a 3am last-drinks policy will have to operate under a 1am entry cut-off), a spectacular crop of local acts has signed on to lend their voices and instruments to the cause, including Baskervillain, The Jensens, Twin Haus, Carmouflage Rose, Erick Sanders, Golden Vessel, Shag Rock and more, as well as others yet to be announced.
Taking place across The Brightside, Black Bear Lodge, The Foundry and The Flying Cock, Brisbane's Big Kick On! is free entry for all. There will be a petition at the door of each venue akin to the recent No Curfew campaign, with staff asking punters for their signature as they head through for, may we remind you, totally free live music courtesy of the awesome venues putting this whole thing on.
