2014 line-up is festival's largest to date
Vivid Ideas is certainly putting the “mental” in “monumental” when it comes to its 2014 line-up of creative visionaries, with the bulging bag of bright sparks to include none other than one-man music machine Flume among its esteemed ranks.
Jess Scully, the Vivid Ideas Festival Director, is continuing to make a distinct mark on the event's range of programming, bringing to the table an In Conversation series – in which Flume, aka Harley Streten, and manager Nathan McLay will take part together – that will mine the minds of industry leaders two at a time, as well as a collaborative masterclass/workshop series, a microcosm of insightful engagement in the form of mini-conferences, and an awards season designed to honour the best of the best from across Australia's diverse creative industries.
“Whether your passion is design, film and animation, science and technology, gaming, music or photography, Vivid Ideas will have something to inform and inspire,” Ms Scully said in a statement.
This year's line-up for Vivid Ideas – part of the wider Vivid Sydney celebrations – is touted as the festival's biggest to date, taking in more than 200 events across 14 industries, a fact openly celebrated by NSW Deputy Premier and Tourism Minister Andrew Stoner.

The list of keynote speakers for 2014 includes “geographer at large” Eames Demetrios; David Christian, a scholar, historian and founder of the Big History Project; EpiBone CEO and co-founder Nina Tandon; digital effects guru Hao Li, and guests from future-ideas funhouse Tomorrow's Toys and a start-up's best friend, Futureshock.
“About 40 per cent of Australia's creative industries are based in NSW, employing around 148,000 people,” Mr Stoner said. “However, there is scope to grow this area of our state economy, and bringing together the best and brightest creative minds from Australia and overseas through creative forums such as Vivid Ideas is vital.”
The In Conversation series runs from May 28 to June 6 at the Vivid Ideas Exchange, level 6, MCA.
Flume and Nathan McLay will speak from 9pm on Thursday, May 29.
Vivid Ideas' masterclasses will run from May 26 to June 7 in various locations within the MCA. Mini-conferences will be held between May 24 and June 3, also within the MCA.
