More Florence & The Machine More Florence & The Machine

As Florence + The Machine teased earlier this week, the group have covered No Doubt’s Just A Girl for the Yellowjackets season two soundtrack. The single is produced by Florence Welch and IDLESMark Bowen.

Just A Girl has never sounded this creepy before - the soft isolated piano definitely helps - but it’s perfect for a thriller television series about people who do what they must to survive, including resorting to cannibalism. Season two of Yellowjackets premieres on Friday, 24 March, on Paramount+.

“I’m such a huge fan of Yellowjackets and this era of music, and this song especially had a huge impact on me growing up, so I was thrilled to be asked to interpret it in a ‘deeply unsettling’ way for the show,” Florence Welch commented in a press release.

“We tried to really add some horror elements to this iconic song to fit the tone of the show. And as someone whose first musical love was pop-punk and Gwen Stefani, it was a dream job.”

As an Instagram video revealed earlier this week, Welch was searching through her on-stage wardrobe in Australia when she found a Yellowjackets varsity jacket, swinging it over her shoulders with a grin.

The clip is soundtracked by an ominous version of the No Doubt classic, opening with an unsettlingly beautiful piano before launching into a rock banger, Welch’s vocal perfect for this style of music.

She captioned the post, “So happy I got picked for the team this year,” with the Yellowjackets Instagram account responding, “We make one hell of a team.”

Florence + The Machine kicked off their Australian tour in Perth on Saturday, 4 March. Today, the group perform at WOMADelaide before heading to Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena on Monday, 13 March, Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Friday, 17 March, and A Day On The Green on Saturday, 18 March.
