Grand piano amongst destroyed equipment

A stage at Adelaide's world music festival WOMADelaide has been destroyed by a fire which broke out in the early hours of this morning.

A representative for the festival – which finished yesterday – told theMusic.com.au today that no one was injured in the blaze on the second stage in the Botanic Park, although South Australian police have confirmed that the fire did “extensive structural and equipment damage”.

The festival has estimated the damage bill at upwards of $250,000, confirming to theMusic that a grand piano was amongst the equipment lost in the fire.

Bump out had begun on the main stage, but not the second stage, and there were no crew present when the fire began this morning. It is believed that security were the ones who alerted police and fire services just before 6.30am.

Fire cause investigators are due to determine the cause.

The event had run smoothly otherwise, according to the festival representative, with 90,000 people attending across the four days – their biggest attendance in recent years.

Neko Case, Fat Freddy's Drop, Megan Washington, Billy Bragg, Lior, Jeff Lang, Jon Cleary, Pokey Lafarge and Thelma Plum were all on this year's bill.
