Federal Government To Take Action Against 'Misogynistic' Wicked Campers

Minister For Women Kelly O'Dwyer has called on support from state and national leaders and transport ministers to take action against "misogynistic" Australian van company, Wicked Campers. 

As Mumbrella reports, O'Dwyer has written to figures around the country calling for the company, which has previously been criticised for featuring offensive slogans and graphics on its rental vehicles, to comply with community standards. 

The Ad Standards Bureau is reportedly powerless to take any action against Wicked Campers as it has not adopted the voluntary code used by many media organisations.

“This approach aims to ensure the company can no longer expose cross-jurisdictional loopholes to escape accountability and continue displaying outdated, misogynistic, vulgar and degrading signage which has masqueraded as vehicle advertising for too long," O'Dwyer wrote. 

It comes just months after NSW's Wollombi Music Festival announced it will ban all Wicked Camper vehicles from its 2019 event this September. 

"For years we’ve had concerns about any Wicked Campers turning up at the festival with some of their pathetically unfunny and misogynistic slogans splattered across its panels," organisers said in January. 

"We’ve actively discouraged people from hiring them and encouraged patrons to look elsewhere, but this year we’ve decided to ban them full-stop. Not just if a van has a demeaning slogan. If ANY Wicked Camper turns up at the fest they won’t be welcome."
