"It’s so encouraging to see a band not interested in pigeonholing themselves to a particular sound or genre."

Local indie label and recording studio Smooch Records have unveiled the news that they've signed Melburnian trio Great Outdoors, and will be releasing their upcoming record Fake News on the label this May.

The indie-pop act features Totally Mild's Zachary Schneider and he says of the album, "We recorded it in two days, the record has been about trusting instincts. It's vaguely political. It’s transitional. It looks towards broader issues but reports back on them impressionistically. Like a young person gathering experiences and grappling with new concepts.

"We're super happy to have it out with Smooch and are excited to share something so fresh with everyone."

Smooch Records co-founder Pete Baxter says of the signing and the band's work, "Fake News is wonderful. Stripped back and present. Where Dad’s Oasis drifted you into a calm dreamy state Fake News stands and delivers eye to eye. It wonderfully captures the art house spirit and pop sensibilities of The Soft Boys, and the room and attitude of Wire’s Pink Flag.

"It’s so encouraging to see a band not interested in pigeonholing themselves to a particular sound or genre. Also a band that isn’t afraid of stepping out from behind the reverb to release something dry and honest, where lyrical content matters and every hit counts. Super excited for this one and I reckon you should be too."

Great Outdoors join Rat & Co, Mouth Tooth and Francesca Mountfort on the label.
