Def Jam Co-founder Steps Down From Businesses Following New Sexual Assault Claim

US entrepreneur, and co-founder of Def Jam Recordings, Russell Simmons is stepping down from his various businesses following another claim of sexual assault.

Last month, Simmons denied various assault allegations made again him, but following a new sexual assault claim made by award-winning screenwriter Jenny Lumet, he has said will step down to focus on “personal growth, spiritual learning and above all to listening”, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Lument penned a guest column for The Hollywood Reporter earlier this week in which she claims Simmons sexually violated her in 1991 when she was 24, recalling the disturbing situation in great detail.

"As the corridors of power inevitably make way for a new generation, I don't want to be a distraction, so I am removing myself from the businesses that I founded," Simmons said in response.

"The companies will now be run by a new and diverse generation of extraordinary executives who are moving the culture and consciousness forward."
