Legendary Australian music series Countdown has been transformed once more: this time, into a coffee table book.
Countdown: A Complete Episode Guide celebrates Australia’s most popular music television show and will be released in the first week of December.
The book will contain 460 A4 pages and is the perfect way to flip through the country’s musical history, all while enjoying your coffee and breakfast.
In addition to showing off the music of the era, Countdown: A Complete Episode Guide will honour the show’s co-creator and presenter, Ian “Molly” Meldrum and the team of creative individuals who brought the series to life behind the scenes.
From its debut on our screens in November 1974 – just before the launch of colour television in Australia in March 1975 – to its final episodes in July 1987, Countdown served as the launchpad for local and international artists to share their music with a captive audience.

Local artists including AC/DC, Skyhooks, Sherbet, John Paul Young, Cold Chisel, INXS, Pseudo Echo, Men At Work, Little River Band, John Farnham, and many others took to the Countdown stage, while international acts such as ABBA, Elton John, DEVO, Madonna, Dolly Parton, Culture Club, Adam & The Ants, and many more performed on the show.
The book launch for Countdown: A Complete Episode Guide will take place on Sunday, 30 November, between 2 pm and 4 pm at The Wicker’s Club, Elsternwick Bowls Club in Brighton, Victoria.
Attendees will be able to meet the book’s authors, Brett Leslie and Milton Hammon, as well as “The voice of Countdown” Gavin Wood, and producers/directors Grant Rule and Paul Drane.
The book will be available to pre-order in November 2025 or from Wednesday, 3 December, at Oakleigh South, Stawell, or Castlemaine in Victoria.
The 50th anniversary of Countdown was commemorated last year with a television special, Countdown 50 Years On, and a commemorative coloured coin.
