As the first single for Carnifex's next record, 'World War X', the metal band team up with Arch Enemy's Alissa White-Gluz for 'No Light Shall Save Us'.
'No Light Shall Save Us' features Carnifex's typical deathcore/death metal song structure, feel and tone; from that huge, booming "swept away..." breakdown at 2:38 to the occasional symphonic instrumental flourishes. Not only that, but the guitar solo feels like it belongs on an Arch Enemy record, and given who this new songs' guest star is, that might just be an intentional move.
Lyrically, the track concerns itself with vast amounts of death, cosmic doomsday events, deep Stygian oceans, and long eternal nights; a bleak par for the dramatic, theatrical course for a band such as Carnifex, really.
The savage, back-and-forth vocals between Scott Ian Lewis and Arch Enemy's Alissa White-Gluz is its greatest aspect, though. It makes for what is basically a death metal duet; a brutal harmony between two of modern metal's most talented screamers. Moreover, Alissa's belting clean vocals during the more-atmospheric bridge section offer a whole new depth and dynamic to the sound of Carnifex; a mixture we haven't really seen before from the band before either. If the American band were hoping to catch the heavy music world's attention as they enter into a new album cycle, then 'No Light Shall Save Us' and its featured vocalists has surely achieved that mission and then some.
It's also just nice to talk about the Arch Enemy vocalist for something other than public photo drama.
The follow-up to 2016's 'Slow Death', Carnifex's 'World War X' kicks off August 2nd.
