Brisbane indie rockers Shag Rock have gone Platinum with their single Sunbleached Girl, which was released in 2016.

A smooth mid-tempo number, the beloved track is anchored by Jacob Reed’s effortlessly comforting vocals tailored to keen radio listeners. You can check out a live version of Sunbleached Girl below.

Sharing the momentous achievement on social media, Shag Rock and Airlock Records founder Ian Haug (of Powderfinger fame) are pictured holding their new, shiny Platinum plaques commemorating the triumph.

Sunbleached Girl has gone platinum, as if,” the band wrote on Facebook on Monday afternoon (12 June).

Haug signed the band in 2014 and gave them their start. By April 2015, Shag Rock released their self-titled debut EP.

Shag Rock added, “Honestly, we’re beyond stoked SBG went the way it did. We wrote a song about 7 years ago without any expectations, but in a way it’s ended up defining a lot of our career.

“A million thank you’s to Ian Haug for pushing to record it, giving it life, seeing something in it we couldn’t yet see. Big Iano saw something in us as a band too, despite barely being able to play in time. We'll be forever thankful to Ian and his label Airlock Records, a dream made possible.

“And lastly thankful to everyone who has shown the song some love over the years, resonated with it, screamed it at a show, played it to your gran - that’s why we write songs. It’s never for us, it’s for you.”

In 2021, Shag Rock released their mammoth double album, Double Overhead, which was nominated for The Triffid’s QLD Album Of The Year last September.

On the album, Shag Rock treated fans emerging from the pandemic with a colossal collection of their classic syrupy surf-rock. The vulnerable record, unravelling the interwoven threads of toxic masculinity and mental health, delicately delves into crucial talking points while wrapped in a swathe of sunny grooves and mellow ballads.
