The grand reopening of beloved Adelaide venue HQ has been delayed with weather conditions slowing construction of its new Hindley Street building.
The North Terrace building and land the venue originally occupied was sold last year and demolished in January, with owners spending the months since developing a purpose-built space in the thick of Adelaide’s entertainment precinct for the beloved institution.
A handful of mid-September gigs – including AFI, Meg Mac and Dan Sultan - have been relocated to other venues, with HQ General Manager Jason Henning telling The Music they’re looking for a mid October launch.
“With the cold weather, the concrete wouldn’t set, so that set us back a few weeks,” Henning said.
“It’s designed so it can cater bigger gigs; we have a balcony overlooking the dancefloor so we can now cater for gigs up to 1,300, whereas the other venue could only do 1,000.”
The live room will be upstairs, with the ground floor hosting a bar and restaurant called The Hindley.
The dedicated downstairs space will have a capacity of 500 and will host acoustic acts and DJs.
