"I'm excited that [comedy] is being lifted up...I like the combination of music and comedy. It makes us feel cooler!"

More Becky Lucas More Becky Lucas

Commanding attention back in 2013 in the 2013 National RAW Comedy finals, Becky Lucas has since gone on to become a comedic force to be reckoned with. From sold-out solo shows at home and abroad, Lucas has performed at some of the biggest venues around the world, alongside some of the biggest names in comedy, including Conan O’Brien, Nick Kroll, Jim Norton, Beth Stelling and many others.

From performing at the Sydney Opera House to The Comedy Cellar in New York and beyond, Lucas' irresistible knack for fusing relatability with razor-sharp delivery is gimmick-free and punctuated elegantly by her sparkling wit; and when she’s not on stage dishing out the laughs, she’s also written a novel, written for TV, appeared in TV shows, and holds the bragging rights as being the first female Australian to feature on Conan O’Brien’s late-night talk show (where he also told her she needed meds after her performance).

In 2021, Lucas took to the stage in-between Melbourne lockdowns to host the prestigious Melbourne International Comedy Festival Gala, and 2022 is already shaping up to be a big one, including an appearance in March at the Super Fun Day Festival in Brisbane, a comedy and music festival bringing together some of the most beloved talent in the country into one amazing day of laughs and riffs. But before this year comes to a close, Becky Lucas stops by The Green Room to chat life as a comedian, fun times in general and also the time both Becky and The Green Room host Tiana Speter saw Gotye get mad onstage at a festival.

"I'm really excited to do it!" Lucas told host Speter. "I love festivals, it's so fun, everyone's always so up for it.

"I'm not even sure what jokes I'll be doing yet, I just started getting back into comedy rooms and testing out new material. But it's been going really well, and I'm really excited!

"I hope to have some really good new jokes for next year - but I don't know what they'll be yet! Hopefully they'll just appear!

"But it's fun to point out different people at a festival and make fun of them," Lucas laughed, her eyes sparkling. "I'm sure there will be a lot of that."

"I love seeing..." Lucas said, then paused. "You know, like, how there's all the different types of people at a festival...my favourite type of guy is the one who doesn't leave the campsite the whole time.

"And he's always, like, a mate or a friend's cousin. And he comes straight from work, he's got high-vis on," Lucas laughed. "He's got his own esky, and then he goes in for one act. But he's just always at the campsite.

"I feel like they don't even leave, ever. They just emerge from the ground...they've been there since Splendour, they just emerge to each location!"

It's at this point in The Green Room episode that host Speter recounts to Lucas a story of a mate who spent the majority of the 2012 edition of Peats Ridge Festival face-down on his deconstructed tent and missed the majority of the festival - and Lucas and Speter quickly realise they were both at the same festival, and evolve into reminiscing about Gotye's headlining set.

"Oh my god!" Lucas exclaimed. "And [Gote] got angry at everyone!

"He was really cross, 'cos you know he's a music teacher, and he totally had angry music teacher vibes.

"It was hilarious, you know how he was, like, running around trying to show everyone all these different instruments? And he's like: 'this one's really interesting, 'cos it actually plays all the octaves!'

"And everyone's just like: JUST PLAY THE SONG!!"

While Lucas won't be playing a midnight New Years' Eve slot come March next year at Super Fun Day in Brisbane, she will be joined by an incredible army of musicians and comedians (including Hockey Dad, Aunty Donna, Middle Kids and many more) - and it's a combination Lucas is entirely on board with.

"I'm excited that [comedy] is being lifted up," Lucas said. "I like the combination of music and comedy.

"It makes us feel cooler!"
