More Ball Park Music More Ball Park Music

Brisbane-bred indie-pop royalty Ball Park Music are already having a pretty good week, what with the release of their quirky new clip for fresh single Nihilist Party Anthem, but it's arguably about to get a little better with the revelation that celebrated comedian and music-lover Harry Shearer counts himself among their considerable number of fans.

In a recent interview with The Music ahead of Shearer's Australian sojourn with his wife, Judith Owen, for the pair's joint cabaret show This Infernal Racket (the full story for which will be published soon), the veteran voice actor said he was "getting hooked" on Ball Park — although, at the time, he wasn't sure whether the act was a person or a band — and listed the group as among the musical artists he's keen on at the moment. In fact, he even name-dropped triple j as a source he uses to find good music.

Along with being a "huge fan" of New Orleans singer-songwriter/pianist Jon Cleary and Brazilian composer Celso Fonseca, Shearer says, "I listen, from time to time, to triple j, and I found myself really getting hooked on — I don’t know if it’s a band or it’s a guy — but a couple of songs by Ball Park Music. I like ‘em!"

He's not alone; Ball Park Music remain one of Queensland's most successful musical exports, with a new full-length album — their fourth — due soon and another appearance at Splendour In The Grass lined up for this July. If history has taught us anything, that'll be just the start of even more success for the Brisbane outfit. Prodigies: as frustrating as they are impressive.
