TikTok sensations and talented pianist and violinist duo Bailey Pickles and Hugo Hui have reimagined the iconic Owl City hit Fireflies with their own cinematic rendition featuring the Sydney Conservatorium Choir.
Pickles and Hui have reached viral status time and time again on TikTok, with the former garnering 1.3 million followers on TikTok for his ability to play songs by ear after one official listen. On the other hand, the latter sits at 800k followers for his equally awe-inducing violin chops. Prior to the release of their cover, the two are frequent collaborators, melding their signature orchestral sound and passion for film music and composers like John Powell and John Williams together to create an immersive journey unlike any other. The duo even contributed to Western Sydney drill group Onefour and CG’s single COMMAS, making a cameo in the music video alongside the group.
On Fireflies, the duo reinterpret the whimsical nostalgia of the original while adding depth and grandeur to it with these lush orchestral elements and the striking harmonies of the 200-voice Sydney Conservatorium Choir. Pickles’ intricate orchestral production provides a foundation for the layered vocal harmonies, transforming the track into a one-of-a-kind listening experience.
“Our goal was to take the magic of Fireflies and expand it into something that feels like the soundtrack to a dream,” Bailey Pickles said in a press release. “Collaborating with the Sydney Conservatorium Choir was an incredible opportunity to push our vision to the next level.”
Fireflies is the final single to come out in the leadup to Pickles and Hui’s largely anticipated joint EP, which’ll feature six tracks – four cinematic covers and two original arrangements. The EP is set to showcase the duo’s music journey from viral TikTok sensations to established recording artists.
