Tomas Lindberg, the lead vocalist of the pioneering Swedish metal band At The Gates, has passed away following a battle with cancer. He was 52.

Lindberg’s passing was confirmed by his bandmates on Tuesday (16 September). Sharing the news on social media, the band wrote: “Tomas passed away this morning following complications related to his ongoing cancer treatment. Despite intensive medical efforts, his life could not be saved.”

They added, “Tomas - You were an inspiration to us all. A true friend, both compassionate & sympathetic. You will always be remembered for your generosity and your creative spirit. You will be eternally missed. Forever in our hearts.”

Lindberg was a founding member of At The Gates. With the band until their 1996 disbandment and subsequent reunions, he featured on all the band’s albums and tours. The band’s most recent album, The Nightmare Of Being, was released in 2021, although they’ve reportedly finished recording a yet-to-be-announced follow-up.

Last month, Lindberg publicly revealed his cancer diagnosis but also told fans that he’d recorded vocals for the band’s upcoming album before he underwent mouth surgery.

Despite sharing the diagnosis last month, Lindberg was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma — a kind of cancer that affects the mouth and palate — in 2023.

In August, he shared that he’d undergone major surgery that “took away a big part of the roof of the mouth,” and had radiation therapy afterwards. More cancer was discovered earlier this year, though, and Lindberg stated that it was “inaccessible by surgery or radiation.”

The singer also told fans that before undergoing surgery, he recorded his vocals for At The Gates’ presently unreleased new album in one day, “just to make sure we HAD the album, so to speak.”

He concluded the post, “It is an album that we all are very proud of, and it’s the first time in 10 years that [bassist] Jonas [Björler] and I have worked together with [guitarist] Anders [Björler] writing an album’s worth of music.

“It is a bit more of a return to the ‘roots,’ probably best described as a mix between the two last albums we did with Anders [Slaughter Of The Soul and At War With Reality]. Hope you all will enjoy it!”
