Interest in all things Star Wars is currently out of this world, and if you're anything like us — shameless uber-nerds — this series of amazing Star Wars fan art will have you purring like Chewbacca winning a game of holographic space chess!
Rekindled by the blockbusting success of The Force Awakens and stoked by the building excitement ahead of next month's premiere of spin-off movie Rogue One (not to mention the upcoming Han Solo prequel due in 2018), fans of the sci-fi mega-franchise are damn near insatiable for any and all reasons to geek out over their favourite light sabre wielding space wizards. Sensing this disturbance in the force, Industrial Light and Magic (the George Lucas-founded visual effects company) challenged artists to create some alternative realities based on the Star Wars universe.
Partnering with ArtStation and Wacom, thousands of creative Star Wars enthusiasts eagerly submitted concept art. The rules were simple: the images had to tell a story in a suitably epic, cinematic style and also had to refer to plot lines within the original trilogy (episodes IV - VI). In total, 3,888 artists from 101 different countries registered, submitting 23,591 visions of an alternative Star Wars reality. The full list of winners can be viewed here, but here are some of our favourites.
