Victoria's live music scene stands at the cusp of a revolution as all-ages gigs make their long-awaited return to the state's pubs next month.
The first such event, which has been made possible through long-discussed amendments to the state's Liquor Control Reform Act, will be hosted by Collingwood's renowned Gasometer Hotel for a very special afternoon featuring performances from esteemed local acts Client Liaison and Animaux on Sunday, July 6.
The inaugural all-ages pub showing – the first in the state in 20 years – comes more than half a year after the Victorian Government committed to pursuing reforms that would make such happenings possible. Previously, pub-based gigs could only be exclusively over-18 or (heavily restricted) under-age shows.
The reforms bring Victoria into line with other states, and have been two years in the making.
In order to hold an all-ages pub events, venues must contact the Victorian Commission of Gaming and Liquor Regulation a week before the planned event; there are no fees or applications, so if you're a fledgling bar, artist, or audience member, it should be a pretty painless experience to stage, play, or attend such a gig.
“So many people now playing or working in the music industry first got the bug seeing an all ages show in the '80s and '90s, so Music Victoria is thrilled that today's generation of youngsters will be afforded the same opportunities,” Music Victoria chief executive Patrick Donovan said of the change.
“It makes sense that young people can experience the joys – and responsibilities – of a live music experience with the support of older siblings and parents in a safe, supervised environment.”
Gasometer's first all-ages event will run from 2.30-6pm on July 6.
