ABC Announces 'Doctor Who' Simulcast With UK

9 August 2014 | 1:13 pm | Staff Writer

The Twelfth Doctor will hit Aussie screens exactly the same time as for our British brethren

The ABC has redefined the notion of "express" broadcasting with their revelation that Aussies won't have to wait long before they get to see the newest season of Doctor Who — in fact, they won't have to wait at all.

In a tweet sent out this week, the national broadcaster explained they would be airing episode one of season eight (or S08E01, for the more net-savvy among you), titled Deep Breath, simultaneously with its premiere in the United Kingdom on Saturday, August 23 (August 24 AEST).

The announcement continues the ABC's trend of thwarting Aussie would-be pirates with respect to fast-tracking Who, an exercise they first undertook back in 2012, albeit with a week's delay back in the day.

It's certainly a smart move, given Whovians' penchant for getting their mitts on stuff they're not supposed to — the episode recently suffered a leak of its script, along with a handful of others.

That's not where the surprises for Aussie viewers end, though — ABC1 also recently announced they would be airing a special interview between Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi and small-screen darling of entertainment journalism Julia Zemiro title When Julia Met The Doctor, to air in the lead-up to the season premiere on August 24.

Still not enough Who for you? Perth and Adelaide will have the chance to catch the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular when it touches down in those cities for the first time next year, as well as returning to previous stop Sydney along the way.

In lieu of a catchphrase befitting the Twelfth Doctor (well, besides "Feck!"), shall we offer a hearty "Allons-y"?

Yes. Yes we shall.
