A Melbourne Theatre Wants Coopers To “Clarify Their Position” Following Same-Sex Marriage Vid

The #boycottcoopers movement is getting bigger.

Melbourne's Malthouse Theatre is the latest to address the Coopers controversy, given that they share a long-standing relationship with the brewery.

Not only did Coopers gain naming-rights sponsorship with Malthouse back in 2013, but the criticism surrounding Bible Society Australia's video, in which Liberal MPs Andrew Hastie and Tim Wilson debate same-sex marriage, comes as the theatre plays host to the production, The Homosexuals Or ‘Faggots’.

"Malthouse Theatre is an advocate for marriage equality and supports the fostering of a society that is inclusive and equal for all Australians," the theatre company said in response to a Facebook query.

"Our staff, Company and artistic team are supporters and members of the LGBTIQA+ community. Malthouse Theatre's programming includes our annual Season, a curated selection of venue hire activities and our forthcoming Comedy Festival at The Coopers Malthouse.

"The views of the Bible Society depicted in the Keeping it Light campaign video are in no way representative of Malthouse Theatre. We have initiated conversations with Coopers to clarify their position."

The Music has contacted the Malthouse for further comment.
