Nominations have officially opened for this year’s edition of the National Indigenous Music Awards (NIMAs).
It comes ahead of the NIMAs’ 20th anniversary, with the milestone ceremony slated for Saturday August 10 at its usual home of the idyllic Darwin Amphitheatre. It’ll be a part of this year’s Darwin Festival celebrations, and tickets are on sale now – head here to grab yours.
As of this morning (May 28), people can head to the NIMAs’ official website (here) to nominate their favourite First Nations artists for a suite of awards for the 2024 ceremony.
Last year’s NIMAs saw Budjerah crowned Artist Of The Year, while Bumpy was honoured as New Talent Of The Year, and King Stingray won both the awards for Song Of The Year and Film Clip Of The Year for their single Let’s Go.
In a press statement, Ben Graetz – creative director for the NIMAs – said he’s “excited to be a part of this year's awards which are the culmination of two decades of Indigenous musical brilliance”. He added: “Each year we come together to honour our diverse First Nations music from across Australia. I cannot wait to celebrate with everyone this year under the stars at Darwin Amphitheatre on Larrakia Country for a memorable night of First Nations musical excellence.”
Additionally, the 2024 NIMAs will mark the debut of a new First Nations Leadership Group, which, it’s noted, was “established to support the First Nations creative and delivery teams and provide strategic and cultural guidance”. The inaugural group is comprised of Michaella Harrison (Bidjara), Kaleena Smith (Wiradjuri, Yorta Yorta), Lynette Fejo (Larrakia), Toni Janke (Wuthathi, Yadighana, Meriam) and Dr. Shellie Morris (Yanyuwa, Wardaman).
