The award-winning Kingston Butter Factory, located in Logan, south of Brisbane, is rapidly becoming a music, arts, and culture hub. With the motto “A place for big ideas and big events,” the venue is making significant strides in the music scene.

“We’re aiming to make a big impact as a music venue for the region, establishing ourselves as a destination for regional and international touring acts,” says Venue Coordinator Nathan Roser.

The beautifully restored red brick building, built in 1932 on top of the original timber structure, once produced butter, milk, cottage cheese, and baker’s cheese.

Today, it is a vibrant cultural precinct. The transformation, completed with a multi-million-dollar investment, has turned the former factory into a centre for community festivals, music concerts, and performances.

Concerts and music festivals are a major focus at the Kingston Butter Factory. The venue boasts a purpose-built outdoor stage with a fan-shaped audience area of over 5,200 m², accommodating 5,000 to 8,000 people depending on event style.

Since its opening in 2022, artists like The Whitlams, Guy Sebastian, Pete Murray, and Dami Im have all performed there. “Our venue is unique in that we have an in-house production package ready to go,” Roser explains. “We’ve been able to meet the production needs of many clients in-house.”

The venue also has a 220-seat indoor theatre, the Butterbox Theatre, situated within the old factory building itself. It hosts more intimate music concerts and events.

Ben Lee performed to a sold-out audience in June, and Troy Cassar-Daley’s upcoming tour stop in November is close to capacity. The theatre also hosts plays, comedy shows, dance performances, workshops, and corporate functions.

Accessibility and Innovation

The Kingston Butter Factory’s Butterbox Theatre has won two Queensland Music Awards for Accessible Venue of the Year for its accessible features, services, and programming. It has accessible parking, PWD and Changing Places bathrooms, wheelchair access from Kingston Railway Station, and hearing assistance technologies.

The Hush Room, a dedicated quiet space in the Butterbox Theatre, allows patrons with diverse needs to enjoy events visually with audio-control attachments.

Using the Cérge Companion App enhances audience interactions with the venue before their arrival at Butterbox Theatre shows, enabling staff to be aware of specific requirements. Patrons can also access a virtual tour of the venue and sensory stories within the app and Logan Arts website.

Future Plans

Situated between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, near the M1 and Kingston Railway Station, the Kingston Butter Factory is well-positioned for growth.

The upcoming Gold Coast Fast Rail Project will further boost accessibility. Logan’s population is expected to grow by over 50 per cent in the next two decades, making it one of the state’s fastest-growing and most culturally diverse cities.

“We’re making great strides in delivering events for different community groups from various cultural backgrounds,” Roser notes. “Every single one of our events has a music element, whether it’s a traditional concert or a showcase of different musical styles from various cultures.”

There are major events over three weekends in August, expected to draw 14,000 attendees to the venue.

“We aim to activate as regularly as possible while being considerate of our neighbours,” Roser says. “The ability to see commercial activation of concerts and festivals is something Logan has never seen, and this venue is well-equipped to service that option. We’re an undiscovered jewel in the entertainment sphere in southeast Queensland.”
