West Australian Music (WAM) has unveiled its nominees across 17 categories in the 2025 Song of the Year competition.

With the awards being presented by Act Belong Commit, there were over 800 original songs submitted by artists from all corners of Western Australia, showcasing the depth of local talent in the state.

The 30-year-old competition is judged by a panel of respected local and national industry professionals, offering songwriters a rare opportunity to have their work recognised and celebrated. Grand winners will receive a cash prize, industry perks, studio time, promotion packages, discounts, and much more. Winners for each category will also receive similar prizes, donated by local sponsors.

The nominated songs span across an array of genres, with a strong representation of emerging and established songwriters from all over WA. Electrifying, young First Nations talent ICONYX has accrued a whopping three nominations, alongside much-loved acts Adrian Dzvuke and Joan & The Giants, who have both received two nominations.

In 2025, WAM debuts a unique new category, A Song for Sophie, where applicants under 25 are judged on lyrics demonstrating a deep connection with human emotions. This award was created in recognition of local music enthusiast and artist Sophie Smith, and made possible by the Sophie Smith Fund held with the Fremantle Foundation.

The 2025 Song of the Year Competition winners will be unveiled at the WAM awards night, returning to Freo.Social on Wednesday, 18 June 2025. On this night, successful artists will join the list of esteemed winners of the competition, including Stella Donnelly, Kučka, Little Birdy, Abbe May, The Waifs, and South Summit.
