Kin and Country

The Vatican presents 'Kin and Country' showcasing the talents of Vonda Last, Sonia Smith and Russell Smith, each offering their unique style of music along with insights into history and country.

Sonia Smith is a strong and proud Kokatha songwriter and artist. With her powerful voice, music and lyrics, Sonia shares the story of her life, from rock bottom times to the Warrior Woman she is today. Sonia shares her endless strength and resilience through truth-telling and song with all heart and soul.

Vonda Last presents her folk and singer-songwriter style music that tells stories of resilience, survival, and the cultural experiences of the First Nation people. Her music could be soulful and introspective, offering a window into the personal journeys and struggles of Indigenous communities.

Russell Smith showcases a more rock or blues-inspired sound, infusing his performances with energy and passion. His music touches on themes of empowerment, activism, and the ongoing fight for Indigenous rights, making for a powerful and engaging musical experience.

By having these three artists with their distinct styles, this event offers a diverse and rich tapestry of First Nation music and storytelling, providing a platform for both entertainment and education.

The Vatican comprises four of Adelaide’s most culturally diverse, experienced, and respected musicians.

Headed by former London-based musicians, the effusive Enrico Morena, probably the most skilled drummer in nuanced and soundscape drumming in Australia, and the virtuosic and melodically charged Julian Ferraretto, arguably one of the most in-demand improvisational violinists in the country…both being PhD graduates of the Elder Conservatorium.

On guitar, Alain Valodze, an expressive composer and producer drawing influences from Flamenco, Folk, Brazilian, and Classical as well as Latin music, which come together to create Alain’s melodic and contemporary new age sound. Lastly, Jamie Harrison on electric and double Bass, quiet by nature. A proud Kokatha man and a Graduate of the Elder Conservatorium of Jazz.
