So begins the trailer for the soon-to-released new documentary, Gurrumul, an in-depth look at one of Australia's most iconic voices and musicians. As many of you will know, Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu was blind from birth, and has since carved out a much-celebrated and storied career in music, finding purprose and meaning "through songs and music inspired by his community and country on Elcho Island in far North East Arnhem Land." The documentary is the "portrait of an artist on the brink of global reverence, and the struggles he and those closest to him faced in balancing that which mattered most to him and keeping the show on the road." Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu died last year, aged 46.
Directed by Paul Williams and produced by Shannon Swan, Perth peeps can catch a special preview screening of it at Perth Festival on Monday 12 February, before it shows at UWA Somerville and ECU Joondalup Pines from Feb 12-25 (info/tickets HERE). It's officially out April 26 via Madman Films.
