VIDEO PREMIERE: The Vacationists - Bush Turkey

17 July 2017 | 3:32 pm | Staff Writer

Sydney post-punk five-piece The Vacationists have unveiled their wonderfully vintage video for their atmospheric, foreboding new single, Bush Turkey.

Proudly premiering on theMusic.com.au today, the clip utilises a mish-mash of old public-domain footage from a variety of videos such as The Atomic Brain (1963), Messiah Of Evil (193), Spooks Run Wild (1941), The Beach Girls & The Monster (1965) and more, creating a fitting complement to the song's eerie, urgent undertow.

According to band member Johan Ydstrand, this is very much by design: "We made the Bush Turkey video by editing and weaving nostalgic horror and surrealist public domain films together into a tale of possession," Ydstrand said.

"The song has always felt to us like a nervy and brisk walk through a dark forest, so we decided to make the video a journey that follows the words of the song through images of its mood and tension."

The song was recorded and mixed by the band themselves, who have used the past three years' of experience together to craft an accomplished and alluring slice of lo-fi delight that sits nicely alongside their earlier work without reinventing the wheel.

Bush Turkey will be officially released this Friday, 21 July, and the band will be launching the show a few weeks later at Sydney's Botany View Hotel on 25 August. If you miss that gig (though we wouldn't recommend it; the band's live shows are the subject of growing renown), they'll also be out and about at the Brighton Up Bar on 28 October.

In the interim, you can connect with The Vacationists on Facebook or check out their earlier work on Bandcamp.
