Gold Coast-based garage punk trio The Sex Guys dropped their newest conspiracy-laced single, Tin Foil Hat, last week - but today, in an exclusive for The Music, we can give you the first look at the accompanying music video.
The track itself is described as “a tongue-in-cheek exploration of conspiracy theories and the quirks of human belief”, coated in a punk-rock exterior. Showcasing The Sex Guys’ signature high-energy sound, Tin Foil Hat relays relatable anecdotes about the social frustrations of dealing with slightly unhinged theorists.
“The song is about frustrations of dealing with someone knee-deep in conspiracy theories. I say knee-deep because they only have surface-level info—they’re not at the balls-deep level, where people in suits would be after them. This song is about those guys. And flat Earth bros—they're wrong too,” frontman Dennis Levonis explained.
Tin Foil Hat’s music video plays into that, starring The Sex Guys singing into the camera with various makeshift aluminium foil shapes on their heads.
“The video for Tin Foil Hat was shot in 1 take. We had minimal time to shoot the clip, as we were trying to be discreet in our home job Faraday Cage made from the 5,551 rolls of aluminium, paddle pop sticks and dental floss we had readily available in our doomsday bugout packs. We didn't have a real bar underground; however, the cigarettes were very real. To compensate, we fashioned the door out of a rundown barn near the site days before going in,” The Sex Guys told The Music.
They continued: “The actual tin foil hats in the video, while thematically accurate, actually served a greater purpose, aiming to further jam any Wi-Fi signal to the cameras, as men in suits were patrolling the perimeter looking for unusually eccentric electronic signals.”
