PREMIERE: Silk 'N' Oak Explore New Horizons In Brassy, Boisterous New Single 'What They Said'

The Qld duo will perform at Brisbane Festival and at Lefty's Old Time Music Hall over the next few weeks.

Folksy Queensland alt-rock duo Silk 'N' Oak today unveil the video clip for their brass-tinged new single, What They Said, signalling something of a sonic growth from their recent self-titled EP.

"I think it's one of our most unique songs," guitarist/vocalist Ricky Saunders said in a statement. "Mainly because I came up with the melody without a guitar in my hands."

The song was created with producer John Hudson, of London's Mayfair Studios, a process bassist/vocalist (and Ricky's brother) Troy described as "an eye-opening experience".

"Our sound develops further every time we’re in a room jamming, or every time we hear a cool new track," they said in a joint statement. "This song is a perfect example of our development. We get excited when we listen to our newer music — we’re really proud of the songs we’re writing at the moment."

The origins of What They Said actually go back a little bit, however, with its genesis coming from an old phone recording Ricky recently uncovered that reminded him of The Strokes, though he acknowledges the final version "doesn't really sound anything like The Strokes".

"The original feel was a lot rawer," he said. "I wrote the lyrics to the completed music and then I had to learn how to play it and still be able to sing the right melody."

Silk 'N' Oak have a couple of outings coming up in Brisbane, including at the Brisbane Festival and a show at Lefty's Old Time Music Hall at the end of the month.
