‘We Can Learn Lessons From The Old Records’: Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard On Songwriting, Legacy & New Music

Wolf Eyes Want You To Be Quiet & Listen: 'Party Inside Your Mind'

Answered by Nate Young

It’s been more than a decade since your last visit to Australia – what took so long to get back and what’s changed since?

Australia is far away from Michigan. Like 30 hours of travel. We have a new guitarist, Crazy Jim, and we are working with MV Carbon who plays electric cello. Our music has changed drastically since I was in my 20s. Expect poetry, saxophone, modular synthesis, electric cello and guitar, if all goes as planned.

Your first release on your new lable, Lower Floor Music, was Undertow – how does that compare to I Am A Problem: Mind In Pieces?

We have made over 200 records and each one is better than the last as far as I am concerned, we are still working towards that myth of a masterpiece, I hope we never succeed.

You’ve since released the No Hate EP surrounding the Charlottesville protests. How did that release come about and why was it so important to you?

We have Trump, can you tell me why you think it came about. I am living in this shit.

Subterranean Life appeared on Adult Swim’s NOISE compilation last year. Why do you think the network has developed such a strong cult following?

Maybe because most adults I know are childish, privileged shit heads, including myself. Just kidding, not kidding.

What can Aussie fans expect from your Unsound appearance?

Three people under the influence playing music thru the top of the head, following the trail back to the stomach and throbbing together to achieve a cohesive vernacular in time with our hearts. To be honest, come prepared to be quiet and listen. The party inside your mind. Out here we are all just trying to not get upset by all the assholes.
