What I Learnt From A Rec Co Internship

Although I still can't polish knobs, I feel I learnt a lot.

Shocked to see the backlash against music industry internships, I have decided to come out and openly discuss my recent educational and joyful experience interning with a record company.

Having previously experienced of the joys of interning with a music website, I was eager to earn my chops in a real part of the music industry.

Fortunately, I was accepted to an intern program at Blowme Records in Yackandandah East, late last year.

Here is an extract from my report turned in to my Music & Show Biz tutor at the end of last semester.

The main duties assigned to me during my time at Blowme included:

Shining mirrors daily – I was informed that due to the vain nature of recording artists, mirrors had to be in tip top condition. Somehow all the mirrors at Blowme had white powder residue smudges and scratches throughtout a normal day's usage. Often the VP personally oversaw this task, teaching me how to remove the powder with quick finger dabs.

Spit-polish knobs – although this appeared on my duty list, I noticed that Blowme only had sliding doors.

Gifting – every day I was given a $1000 allowance to spend buying up tracks from Blowme's catalogue on iTunes and gift them to my friends. I must have made good choices as the songs I bundled off to relatives and friends every day always appeared to move up that week's charts.

Parcel delivery – when the label had visiting artists they always liked to give them surprise presents. I was often advised to conceal small boxes containing the 'surprise' gifts into muffin baskets and floral arrangements before delivering them to the artists' hotel room.

I hope everyone can see from this that what I learnt from this internship has placed me in good stead for a future in the industry. However, having not yet gained enough spit-polish experience, I am hoping that some industry mogul can take me under their wing and show me how to get a grasp on this in case it turns out to be one of the most important ways to advance in this business.
