"I’m doing me and it’s been a long time coming."
WA artist Paige Savill has hit the ground running with Not The Beginning, the hook-heavy debut single for her new solo project Alex Andra.
Citing bands like Paramore and Stand Atlantic as inspiration, Savill's husky delivery on the track harks back to the golden era of rock's powerhouse frontwoman, but the chunky riffs and propulsive drums are pure pop-punk.
“Alex Andra is an extension of myself," says Savill, "and through her I will give myself a platform to allow all that fuels the fire in me to manifest in colour and sound.”
Though it's her first music under the new name, it's not Savill's first time around the block - she received two WAM Award nominations with her new-wave synth-pop band I Call Vall, and was selected for WA’s first APRA AMCOS female singer-songwriter mentorship program in 2018.
"The title Not The Beginning - as much as it’s tongue-in-cheek for a debut, I’ve been through enough shit already," Savill tells The Music.
"It’s like I’ve had to quietly withhold this angst to adhere to what kind of artist I 'should' be. Too pop, too feminine, too intense, too Perth. I’m doing me and it’s been a long time coming."
