Single Focus: The Zoo City Lads

Answered by: Michael Galilee

Single title? Sad Songs

What’s the song about? Trying to build a life for ourselves despite knowing the world could end at anytime. No sunshine and rainbows here.

How long did it take to write/record? We had recorded a bunch of other songs and had half hour left in the studio. This song I had kicking around for a while and we recorded it pretty much in one take.

Is this track from a forthcoming release/existing release? We are currently prepping songs for our debut album due out mid-2015 so not sure if this will be included or if it will be a standalone single.

What was inspiring you during the song’s writing and recording? Glenfarclas 15-year-old scotch whiskey. Full bodied with a superb balance of sherried sweetness, malty tones and peaty flavours. Long lasting, gloriously sherried, sweet, gently smoky and distinguished.

We’ll like this song if we like... Catchy hook-laden garage rock played loud.

Do you play it differently live? Not much variation live but we do play it heavier and louder. And you never know, we may have a few tricks up our sleeves for the next gig.

When and where is your launch/next gig? 17 Jan, Bald Faced Stag for our official single launch, and we are bringing along some killer Sydney bands for a huge night of rock’n’roll.
