Single Focus: Day Of The Meerkat

Day Of The Meerkat chat to us about their new single, Tokyo Black Wolf.

What's the song about? It's about all those bands with 'Tokyo', 'Black' or 'Wolf' in their names. It would also be about all the bands with 'Bear', 'City' or 'Twin' in their names but it's only three minutes long. It's about how weird and perplexing rock music fads are. If we see another video with people throwing paint at each other, or wearing animal masks, we're going to pack ourselves off to the funny farm.

Is this track from a forthcoming/existing release? Yes. Our debut full length, Heck, is on the way.

How long did it take to write/record? We recorded it live at Dirty Shirlows in three minutes and nine seconds. We did some extra 'la la la's' with friends later on.

Was anything in particular inspiring you during the making? When we're king for a day we'll ban band names with 'Tokyo', 'Black' or 'Wolf' in their names and forbid paint-throwing and animal masks in videos. But I guess, in a way, we should thank them because we were inspired by all this wretched predictability to lampoon unoriginality.

What's your favourite part of the song? When the riff peels off into the demented and drone-ish 'la la la' outro which is topped off by a giggle at the end.

Do you play it differently live? Nope. We recorded it live so we play it just the same.

Will you be launching it? At the Sandringham Hotel on Friday 20 July with Surprise Wasp and Black Island.
